Ana Barreiro

Independent

I started playing drums at 12 years old playing in my church in Brazil. Moved to Sao Paulo to study music and later to the US to learn more about Jazz. As a result of that, I play a lot of Brazilian music and Jazz and anything in between. Currently I work as a session musician and live in Los Angeles, I teach at the Musicians Institute and also at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. You can find me playing with Otmaro Ruiz, Carol Bach-y-Rita, Catina DeLuna, C3 Los Angeles, Red Light Brass Band, Natalie Cadet, Elizabeth Lamers and my own project AmyAna.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My first performance with Otmaro Ruiz was challenging but amazing, I worked hard to learn the music and on the bandstand his playing totally made my playing go to a different level I haven't experienced before. I remember feeling I was in the edge a lot of times but landing every now and then in an amazing place.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

When I see people playing drums at a high level and really passionate about music. I just saw Terry Line Carrington with her new project in DC and I felt so inspired by how she plays and what she is doing with music and social justice right now.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

Vic Firth has been in my life since I started playing drums. It was always connected to quality and to my favorite drummers. I choose Vic because I learned how to play drums with Vic and nothing feels better.
